We The Media 4

December 4, 2009

In chapter 10, Gillmor talks about the risks that bloggers and commenters on blogs have when it comes to libel.  Why is it that professional journalists have to watch what they say about people but amateur bloggers don’t? It’s because journalists have a reputation to withhold and an image to represent.  And what happens to commenters who post on someone elses blog? Who will take the blame? For now, no one.  It is unfair to put the blame on a blogger for another blogger’s defamatory comments.  Now, companies are taking matters into their own hands.  In a financial forum, companies have demaded internet service providers to give them the identities who have openly defamed their reputation.  Aside from monitoring the words of others, cheating has also become a popular tool to get ahead of the game.  It is acceptable to use a short quote from the owner and you must also give them the credit they deserve.  But it is not ok to copy someones entire work and resell it.

Chapter 11 discusses the freedom and liberty people feel when they use the internet.  Not only can you search and find everything imaginable, you can also say what you want when you want.  Recently, this freedom has been controlled by authority who think they have the right to say what is right and wrong.  Who wants our media to be overlooked and dictated by the government? Where did our freedom of speech suddenly disappear to?  We should have the right to unlimited information on the web and we as individuals should also know what is good and bad, right or wrong information.  Cookies have also become a staple on the internet and allows one to see exactly what and where a user has been on the web.  Isn’t this a violation of privacy?  I’m not talking about privacy to view innapropriate content, I’m talking about our right as individuals to look at whatever we want in the privacy of our computers.

In chapter 12, the author talks about how blogs are information we know and want to share and this for some is a source of news, accurate or not.  We are indeed receiving our freedom of speech by sharing information on the web, but the issue of credibility and fairness will always be debated.  Where exactly are bloggers getting their information?  From people who have actually done the research and work to create information to be shared.  Copyright is a wonderful thing, but not when it is abused. Gillmor stresses that you should use your voice to create news, however make sure it is the right way.
