We the Media 1

November 25, 2009

Journalism has evolved its medium of news sharing over the last several decades, especially within the past few years with the accessibility of the internet. One big step in this evolution is the creation of CNN. This approach to present news at all hours of the day acted as a catalyst that triggered the way we consume news today. Many people have taken advantage of this convenience, indirectly demanding news material around the clock from journalists.

The mass availability of the internet has helped accelerate the consumption of news media online. News stories go into more detail on newspaper websites as more in-depth video and photo content are shared with readers. With all this material available online for free, newspapers are losing more subscribers everyday — giving fewer reasons why advertisers should invest dollars in placing ads in a paper that fewer readers will see. Although this may be discouraging to newspapers, this has significantly given journalists the opportunity to advance the multimedia content online for readers to increase their experience with consuming news. The next several years will no doubt see changes in the publishing world as people everywhere in the business continue to find ways to increase readership and at the same time profitable opportunities to keep afloat.

Final Project Plan

November 12, 2009

As a student photojournalist, I have learned several things while shooting for Spartan Daily that I wouldn’t have otherwise learned in my other classes. I would like to share and illustrate a few lessons I have learned during this experience. Some of the stories I plan to share in a three-part video series are catching candid human emotion, trying to be invincible with a two-pound D-SLR camera sticking to your face, and capturing animals. I will probably use my own photos to illustrate my points

I plan to use my FlipVideo camcorder (UltraHD version), Audacity 1.3,  my photos, and use Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 to edit and export my videos.

Did You Know 2.0

October 29, 2009

“Did You Know 2.0″ video reaction.

With the world heading towards an age where communication and information sharing will be virtually effortless, the possibilities of human accomplishments can only be limited to the imagination. While I watched this 3 year old video, I worried about my own place in the world. Will I need to go back to school in the near future? Am I keeping myself updated with the lastest technology advances and online resources as much as the next person who just might take my job? With the speed these resources are becoming available to me, how can I constantly keep myself informed of the newest… everything?

One of the most prominent points the video relayed with its statistics is the fact that the United States will soon, if not already, fall behind growing nations like India, China and Great Britain in terms of technology advancements and educational institutions. I’d imagine Americans may feel a litte insecure having been outdone by previously considered third world countries, but that would show just how far behind we are in acknowledgeing just how true the “Did You Know” video is. However this video may make me feel with a sense of overwhelming anxiety toward my bleak future, I can either embrace these global changes by stepping into the constantly moving river named The Information Age and take in what I can, or not embrace it  — placing me in an incredible disadvantage called “outdated.”

Kirsten Aguilar in third person

September 10, 2009

Hello. I’m pretty quiet and shy, so I decided to type this in third person in attempt to avoid the discomfort of having to talk about myself — as if my life were not fabulously exciting enough for you. So here we go!

Senior journalism major Kirsten Aguilar is a native of San Jose, and is willing to go anywhere she has never gone to before — just as long as she can bring her camera with her. She is currently studying photojournalism with her academic focus geared towards Radio, Television and Film (RTVF). TIME magazine, National Geographic magazine and The New York Times are just a few of the publishing institutions that have influenced Kirsten enough for her to enter this competitive field of work.

Before majoring in journalism, Kirsten spent her first two years at San Jose State studying nursing and mechanical engineering. When she is not reaping the rush and stress from her procrastinated assignments, Kirsten enjoys spending time with her family and friends, taking photos, learning multimedia storytelling and discovering new music. She looks forward to taking the software techniques she learns in this class and be able to polish them up in the future.
