Did You Know 2.0

October 8, 2009

This video was particularly interesting to watch. I had heard of it before but never sat and watched it but I am glad that I did. My first reaction was “Man, that sucks.” I know it sounds generic, but that was what my gut told me. It sucks because from taking other classes here at SJSU, I’ve learned that education in America is not as good as it is in other countries. It’s not as bad as some either, but there are other places that far exceed our “standard” education.  In many countries, young students go to school for longer than an 8-3 day. Some students even go to school on Saturday, and not because they got into trouble! It is standard in many countries for students to become 100% fluent in another language, and that was evident with the fact stated in the video: in 10 years it’s projected that China will have the highest number of English speaking people.

I was one of the fortunate children to have internet at age 8, with the first version of America Online. I even remember the first screen name I picked out. Prior to having internet in my home, I had computer lab at my school starting in Kindergarten. Aside from playing games like The Oregon Trail during the fun hour, I did my math and reading assignments strictly on computers. Now, this is no big deal. STandard, if you will.  I thought about the number of Google searches there are a day and what did the world do before Google. Well, I personally went to the library and picked up a book or encyclopedia to find out. Isn’t that what everyone did? My children are going to look at me funny when I tell them that encyclopedias used to be physical books!

What was particularly disheartening for me was to view the statistic of  college graduates having 10-14 different jobs by their 38th birthday! I am 22, graduating in a couple of months. I never had the belief that I would find my “dream” job immediately after college. I hold the hope that that is something that I will aquire after years and years of hard work, but seeing that statistic makes me feel like it is unattainable. It “killed my joy” to a certain extent. I feel inadequate, even. I feel like if I were to go abroad and find a job, my degree would be laughed at because the quality of education in our country is so poor. To make it hit home a little bit more, I feel like my diploma from SJSU isn’t going to mean as much as it once did with the way the CSU system is going downhill. Blah!

This is ME!

My name is Kachet…commonly misprounounced “catch-it,” but you say it like cash-ay. I am very proud to say that because I added this class I am graduating this December with a major in Public Relations and a minor in Sociology. I’m a 4.5 year student. I am from Sacramento and I came to SJSU from Sacramento in Fall 2005 as a freshman. SJSU was not my first pick for school. I actually was accepted to every school I applied to but when I came and took a tour of the campus and met many of the faculty, something just felt right. I have not once regretted coming here for higher education.

In January I participated in a trip with the Journalism & Mass Communications department titled, “44 Years to the 44th President- Connecting Our Past with America’s Historic Future.” It was a 10-day (road trip) Civil Rights Tour of the South. We visited landmarks in Memphis, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and ended in Washington D.C. for the Inauguration! During our trip we produced media packages and we journaled. Our material was broadcast on CNN and KTVU-2. We also made the front page of the Merc and had our written work published on numerous dates. The 10 students that participated received the College of Applied Sciences and Arts Dean’s Award for our participation on the trip and the mark we made in the history of our school. I was fortunate enough to be interviewed live in Atlanta by Kyra Phillips and also give the acceptance speech for the Dean’s Award.

The trip changed my life in ways that I could’ve never dreamed of. I have become a better and more humble person because of all of the places I went to and people I met. It is important that I tell those that I meet about the trip because it will help them understand me more.

Anyway, throughout college I have kept myself busy by working almost full-time and interning, while also taking a full load of courses. I’ve had the same retail job for almost two years and truly feel like I am overqualified for my position as a sales associate. I am the Communications intern with the City of San Jose’s Parks, Recreation and Neighorhood Services department, in the Marketing and Event’s office. Our main events are Christmas in the Park and the San Jose Holiday Parade (be our fan on Facebook, Myspace and Twitter). It takes up a lot of my time, but I know it will be SO rewarding in the end. I am actually the sole coordinator for the Mrs. Claus’ Breakfast Nook on the day of the parade and sells out annually. I am hoping that the experience I gain from this office will take me where I want to go… and I’m still figuring out where that is :)

I am moving to the Baltimore/D.C. area immediately following graduation to find a job on the East Coast. I do not want to be in California anymore. A lot of my family and friends live on that side of the country and I also feel like I’ll have greater opportunities out there. Hopefully it all works out! :)
