We the Media 4

In chapter 10, journalism requires quantity of writing. However, it is really easy to get into the lawsuit. No matter how hard the journalists get the basic stuff right and follow all the rules, but it’s still easily to fall into the trap. In this way, once the journalist makes a mistake, he/she should correct it right away before the lawsuit comes. Online journalists are required to heed the law as other journalists. It doesn’t mean blogger no need to commit libel when they write something over the border. On the other hand, copyrights are the largest problem in the lawsuit field. Trademarks like words, logos, symbols, colors, songs and many others are helping to define a brand. It is simply get into libel if the creator doesn’t follow the copyrights’ rules.

In chapter 11, Gillmor tries to tell us how freedom is important to us in the cyber world. We are restricted the way we use the internet by many limitations and rules created by the big bothers and media. However, Gillmor made a few false claims about the technology to support this point. Sadly, Gillmor has no idea how “cookie” works. Cookie can’t cause any harms or serious privacy problem. Browser also makes it easy for user to delete their cookie. Gillmor also fails to understand why peer-to-peer download should be restricted. The illegal download activity is causing the movie and music industry losing million of money. It is a misleading Gillmor fails to understand when human are given freedom to do whatever they want. They don’t obey to the law.

Chapter 12, Gillmor makes a very good point with the current technology today such as Facebook and Twitter that news can spread around the globe instantly. During the Iran protest, the Iranian were using twitter to communicate to the world faster than the news can report. However, such communicate tool will only be effective during big events and crisis. In the normal day, Facebook and twitter update are usually full of useless information. People often twitte “I am eating a sandwich” or “having a nice day walking with my dog”. Moreover, some of the information is also not reliable. During the fort hood shooting, some people were twitting the killer were shoot dead. In fact, he was injury and captured already. With so many news floating on the Internet today, we will need to be precaution and verify the news from couple different sources.

In Chapter 7, Gillmor mentions about Wiki is an online data that everyone use frequently. There is no doubt on numerous users to visit Wikipedia page daily. However, it is surprised me this heavy traffic web page allows all kind of users to edit any information from Wikipedia. Actually it is a benefit solution to prohibit the destroyers damage the website. The destroyers understand millions of the volunteers will repair the damage within a second after their destruction, so the bad ones will drop the harmful ideas. I might didn’t pay enough attention back to Chapter 2 because Gillmor did talk about the Wiki, but it is a good refresher for my memories.

In Chapter 8, I cannot agree more on what Gillmor says, “The tools of creation are now everywhere, and they are getting better.” Nowadays everyone can be a reporter/recorder as long as they have video camera phone in hand. In addition, the build-in camera phone is so cheap that everyone can afford extra features in one price, so I believe most of the mobile phone users are using build-in camera phone. The ones who love to take pictures and record videos from everywhere, they can share their posts through multi-media just by few clicks. Today’s technologies shift from expensive to affordable, it is an useful speciality for the ones who like creations.

In Chapter 9, internet is simply accessible to get all kinds of information. However, do we ever prove how trustful of the sources? It is really easy to fall into some false information and lot of us do not question about the data. For instance, this chapter talks about the new ways to mislead. John Kerry was attacked by the criticism form internet on 2004. No one knows who created the counterfeit information, but readers believe the article of Kerry was gathering protest the Vietnam War. I think all the reader shouldn’t fully believe the articles from internet, we should use our own judgment or search more information on the same topic.

Final Project Plan

November 12, 2009

For my finial project, I will be using iMovie HD to create three episodes of my favorite makeups. I always wanted to take some makeup classes, but due to budget tight, I never able to reach my goal. I watch many makeup tutorials from youtube and learn my makeup skills from there. I would love to upload my own video on youtube and share my makeup experience, but I always don’t feel comfortable in front of the camera. However, this finial project is a good practice for me to speak in front of the camera. I will be sharing about my favorite palette, my favorite false eyelashes and my favorite concealer.

In chapter 4, Gillmor mentioned about how important “Blogging” for a corporate. He pointed out “Blogging is an opportunity for Public Relations, not a threat”.  I totally agreed blogging is a modern way for the corporate to communicate with audiences. It is penetrate for the costumers to follow what is the corporate going on. Gillmor also said about internal blog can keep all the workers up to date on the projects and each other’s individual breakthrough. Either an internal or external blog, it needs to be limited on what employees can say and how they can say it. It will be affecting the corporate when an employee said something overly. In this way, a leather of the corporate has to be committed to the process of blogging. By the end of the chapter 4, Gillmor said about PR and Marketing people need to listen hard and keep an eye on all kinds of chat rooms, discussion boards, emails and blogs. In this way, the ones who work under PR and Marketing would not miss any information from the corporate.

In Chapter 5, Gillmor discusses how new media changed the politics. In 2000, America experienced the Internet as a fund-raising tool. John McCain raised $6.4million online from his campaign against George Bush. It was an extraordinarily increased. Although McCain lost the campaign, it tells Internet fund-raising had become a strong political cluster. In this Chapter, it is quite tedious for me because I’m not a politic person.

In Chapter 6, I entirely agreed on Dan Gillmor said “The most successful blogs by professional journalists have shared some of the characteristics that make any blog worth reading.” If the journalist or the writer didn’t include their personality into the blog, I’m pretty sure not much audience will follow the blog for long. A prosperous blog should have particular attractive elements to target the audiences. No matter good writing, photos, real reporting, voice or focus, those are the segment to become successfully.

Did You Know 2.0

October 8, 2009

This video is really interesting. I found out lots of stuff that I didn’t know. I always thought about India has more college students than China. I didn’t even think about China has over 3.3 million of the college graduated students. It is not surprising Indian can speak English. As we all know, lots of credit card service centers had a base in India to answer phone calls. However, 100 percents of the graduated students from India speak English fluently? I really didn’t know this. On the other hand, seriously, I won’t take a guess China will be number one English speaking country in ten years later. How come US is not the number one English speaking country?

In this video, I learned lots of the current majors did not exist years ago. I thought New Media major was many years ago, also Organic Agriculture major. Although organic food has been popular within this few years, but I thought organic agriculture major was there since long time ago.

70% of the US children by four years old have used company. I’m really wondering how about 10 years later. Will it be 90% of two years old children have used technology in US? I can’t recall when did I start using SMS; it could be eight years ago. I’m not surprise text messaging is exceeding the whole plant nowadays. I’m amazed the technology could be growing faster than anything else.

I found out something funny in this clip. One out of eight couples met thought the Internet and married. I met my ex-boyfriend from friendster, it was a social network like facebook. Too bad we weren’t one out of eight, but there is a big possibility meeting better half from Internet. This video also mentioned about if MySpace were a country, it would be 8th largest in the world. How about Facebook? I’m guessing it would be the 3rd largest in the world?

We the Media 1

Broadcasting has always played a key role in the transition to consolidation. Back to the days, newspapers are the only source to let people know the news. From time to time, it turns out radio, television, and Internet are the other main sources to perceive news beside newspapers. Even newspapers are the traditional way to perceive the news, but it has been swallowing from other broadcasting sources. I’m not a person who loves to read newspaper, I rather watch TV and search online for the news. The news from Internet are always up-to-date and it’s free. In this case, the “free” I’m talking about is not just about the cost, but it is as well regarding Freedom. I can read news from my Iphone wherever and whenever I wanted to. I can comment on the news and share the news to my friends right away. I do agree on Gillmor said broadcasting is a one-to-many medium. The telephone is one-to-one and Internet, for the first time is many-to-many medium. After I post the news to my personal blog or facebook, I do always get feedbacks. By the time my friends and I are exchanging thoughts, this is a simple way to communicate. I also agree to Gillmor said that The U.S. networks’ news programming wasn’t available in foreign country. I originally from Hong Kong and I still keep my eyes on Hong Kong news while I’m in US. The local newspapers and local channels won’t mention too much about the news from Hong Kong. I do go on Internet weekly to check out what’s happening from my own country.

Back to 10 years ago, mobile phone is getting popular in the US. I remember using mobile phone to send a SMS is a really fancy feature. By the time changed, SMS is one of the main technologies nowadays. Gillmor rings my bell regarding airlines sent out SMS when they have promotions, time changes and flight changes. It becomes much more convenient for the passenger. However, a convenient did turn into leaked out the SARS information from China by one quick SMS. It showed there is no hided information from current technology. In chapter two, the writer did mention about P2P. I never know the term of file-sharing software is calls P2P. I’m not a music person and I didn’t know this feature until I read this chapter.

People created different technologies and technologies changing lives. Some people think the changing can bring different people together, some of those believe making people apart. I’m not sure which field I should stick on, but I do agree everyone could be a writer nowadays and sharing their thought on the web. Others are easy to see no matter where they are and it just one click away from the page. To me, it is simple to explore information online. On the other hand, there is no privacy once you put something on the web. The explore will become expose by web page clicking…
